Another chapter in bus history was made on
23rd Feb 2002 as Arriva Surrey and West Sussex withdrew their last service
that entered the 'London' Area, in the shape of the 418, together with
fellow route number 479 previously long associated with the Kingston -
Epsom - Leatherhead corridor. It seems incredible that services which were
so busy in years gone by that they required DDs and in some cases crew
operated Routemasters (e.g. 405/414, 406, 408/470, 409/411 etc) have been
wound down to such an extent that they have all ended up such unpatronised
CC contracts or connections abandoned altogether.. The old Arriva 479
is shown together with the new London Buses replacement for part of the
418, between Epsom & Kingston, awarded on Temporary contract to London
United. |

One of the few remaining Arriva Surrey and
West Sussex services now mostly based on Guildford is the 25, most of
which change to/from route 24 at Cranleigh to provide a pleasant Surrey
tour.. SLFs provide the mainstay of the service courtesy of a Surrey
CC Contract on a sunny day near Guildford Bus Station. |

Long time London 'Country' Area trunk
route 406 finally surrendered to the Arriva butchery on 27th Jan 2001 that has befallen
many of their commercial services these days - The Kingston end
becoming an LT contract with London United, the Redhill end cut beyond
Epsom and renumbered 460, as demonstrated by this Ex London Metrobus DD,
but only for 3 months as since 21st April 2001 this route has gone to Metrobus
along with all of Arriva Merstham's other commercial operations... and
good luck to them! |

Most DD operations in Arriva Surrey and
West Sussex are now in the hands of ex London Metrobuses cascaded from
Arriva's London North and South. The previous 411 saw some DDs and some SDs, and
our example shows one such DD at the Oxted end, now left to County Council
contracts... |

Basically what used to be the Southern & South
Western parts of the old London Country, plus some Guildford services of the old
Alder Valley, however for various reasons the services of this company
have been gradually cut back to a mere shadow of their former glory.

Line 290.
