 Routes operated by First in Avon & Somerset / First Southern National

First Southern National has now been split up and passed to neighbouring First companies to administer. It has operated as 2 separate trading units for many years, so this has come as no major surprise... Somerset operations, based around Taunton and Bridgwater, have passed to Badgerline, the Bristol and Avon operator, and will now be known as First in Avon and Somerset. I have never covered Badgerline, so our route list for this area covers mostly only the previously Southern National services. The Dorset operations, based around Bridport, Yeovil and Weymouth, have passed to First Southampton and First Hampshire (Provincial), to now be known as First in Hants and Dorset... (historical note, Hants and Dorset was the National Bus company same for what has now become Stagecoach in Hampshire and Wilts and Dorset!).

First have announced they are pulling out of Exeter: Southern National, Western National and Red Bus will  close their combined outstation in the City in September and work most routes from the other ends. The X53, a success story for the Rural Bus Grant, had one bus kept overnight here for Southern National, so will have to work from Bridport or Weymouth in future.

Corporate First-ness spreads it's wings wider with new SLFs for Southern National's 21 & 21A, between Taunton & Burnham. As with other First Companies, there seems no plan to re-paint any existing vehicles into the Pink & Purple, but the meagre new deliveries for the provinces are appearing thus... 

SLFs for the Axminster - Weymouth section of the 31 are now dedicated ones, with  place names above the windows, but since these seem to spend their time on the X53 these days, that only leaves the plain ones for the 31! A rural bus grant Sunday departure as usual is devoid of any patronage at Axminster Railway Station terminus.

Not valid on: X94 south of Blandford Forum; Wilts & Dorset X65; First Badgerline 22, X55, X56, Bath Tour 51; First City Line X34; Park & Ride services, First Southern National X1, X65 between Wareham and Bournemouth, X66 between Bere Regis and Bournemouth.
