Explorers etc

Here you'll find prices and validity details of the various bus company explorer or 'rover' type tickets.

Note: The reason for this page will become apparent... the Explorer ticket is a leftover from the old National Bus Company days... but now the map has been carved up between only a few big players some of the old agreements still survive, and other new facilities have been opened up according to who owns neighbouring companies and who bought which firms on the way... Also in a lot of cases Company A's ticket may be valid on Company B's services, but it does NOT follow at all that Company B's ticket will allow you to travel on Company A's services!! Beware!

Another common occurence is the tickets of companies like Stagecoach Coastline and Stagecoach South Coast: They are part of the same group, both operate to Brighton and their tickets have IDENTICAL validity, yet there is more than £1 difference in the cost - pick where you start your excursion carefully, or where to buy up stocks of scratch offs in advance!!

Note also: It DOES generally follow, however, that with a service which is a combined operation between two companies, the explorer tickets of both companies will be ok on the vehicles of either operator on that particular route only.

I would very much like to thank Michael Wadman for his enormous help with the compilation of this section.....

***** Health Warning: ***** MOST of the Prices and some of the validity comments are now OUT OF DATE - you have been warned!!! Updated sections are near the top!

It was an intention of Stagecoach to have one national Explorer ticket across all of their companies, but was stopped in 2004 due to the problems with differing prices across the county, particularly the North West and Scotland. Therefore the Central & Southern operators have agreed to continue interavailability of both Explorers and Goldriders as many of the areas overlap at one end or another, but you may have problems up north, although they do have their own Explorer tickets.

You will find details of companies beyond those which are included on this web site also listed here....

TRANSPORT FOR LONDON BUS SERVICES
Fares revised annually around 6th January, THOSE QUOTED are the 2002 fares, so they are a bit out of date:

The 'Greater London' area for TRAINS is bounded by the following stations, clockwise: Slade Green, Crayford, St Mary Cray, Knockholt, Riddlesdown, Kenley, Coulsdon South, Woodmansterne, Belmont, Cheam, Stoneleigh, Surbiton (on Guildford/Woking lines), Hampton Court, Hampton, Feltham, West Drayton, West Ruislip, Moor Park, Hatch End, Elstree & Borehamwood, Hadley Wood, Crews Hill, Turkey Street, Enfield Lock, Harold Wood, Upminster and Rainham.

The Greater London area for BUSES is broadly the same, except that the Stoneleigh area is not included, nor is Moor Park, Borehamwood, or any of Buckhurst Hill, Chigwell, Loughton, Debden or Epping.

Within the 'Greater London Area' Zones are arranged from Zones 1 to 6 on rail services, Zone 1 is Central London, and then concentric rings around this one from 2 to 6. On the buses there are only 4 zones, 1 to 4 - 1 to 3 are the same as rail zones 1 to 3, Bus Zone 4 is equivalent to rail zones 4, 5 and 6 added together.

All zone one day travelcard: Cannot be bought on the bus. Buy on the day or up to 7 days in advance from Underground or Railway stations within Greater London. Can also be bought at Network South East Railway stations as an 'add-on' to a return to London, generally at about £2.30 above the cost of the usual return fare to Zone 1. Now available in Peak and Off Peak versions on Mon-Fri: Peak valid from 0001 on day of validity, Off Peak version from 0930. Both then valid until any journey commencing before 0430 the following morning. On Saturdays and Sundays Off-Peak version is valid all day, so Peak version only necessary Mon-Fri. Peak One day: £10.50 (Child £5.20), Off Peak £5.30 (2004 fare) Adult , £2 Child (No change).
